A 3 × 4 cm photo for a Japanese résumé, from a phone portrait, under 200 KB
An English teacher applying for a job in Japan needs a 3 × 4 cm photo on the rirekisho, the Japanese résumé, and the recruiter’s online form takes a JPG of 200 KB at most. The photo is a 3024 × 4032 pixel phone portrait taken against a light wall.
- Choose the photo. “Fill and crop” is preselected and a 3:4 frame appears; as the photo is already 3:4, the frame covers all of it at first.
- Pull a corner in and drag the frame over head and shoulders, the head about three quarters of the height with a little space above the hair.
- Leave Output format on “Same as original” and set “Keep the file under” to 200 KB.
- Press Resize to 30×40 mm and download the file.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Photo | 3024 × 4032 px JPG from the phone |
| Fit | Fill and crop (recommended) |
| Output format | Same as original (JPG) |
| Keep the file under | 200 KB |
| Result | 354 × 472 px JPG under 200 KB, marked 300 dpi |
The file is exactly 354 × 472 pixels, 30 × 40 mm at 300 dpi, named like the original with -354x472 added. To get under 200 KB only the JPG quality is lowered, never the pixel count. For a paper résumé, print it at 100 % and it measures 3 × 4 cm.
How it works
- Drop the portrait onto the box, or choose it from your phone. A photo taken against a plain light wall works best.
- Fill and crop is preselected. A 3:4 frame appears on the photo; drag it over your face and pull a corner to size it.
- Press Resize to 30×40 mm. The output is exactly 354 × 472 pixels, which is 30 × 40 mm printed at 300 dpi.
- Download it. Print it on photo paper at 300 dpi, or attach it to the online form as it is.
Frequently asked questions
- Why 354 × 472 pixels?
- 30 mm ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 354 and 40 mm ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 472. That is the 3×4 cm format at 300 dpi, the resolution print shops and government upload forms expect.
- Which documents use 3×4 cm?
- Japanese and Korean résumés and student cards, Brazilian RG, CNH and carteira de trabalho, and school and employer forms in several other countries. Passports are usually 35×45 mm instead: use the 35×45 mm preset for those.
- Does the file say 300 dpi?
- Yes. A JPG or PNG comes out marked 300 dpi, so photo software and print shops open it at 30 × 40 mm. The pixel count, which is what matters, is exact either way (a WebP file carries no dpi mark).
- How much of my face should fill the frame?
- Most rules put the head at roughly three quarters of the height with a small gap above it. Size the frame that way before pressing the button; the tool does not detect faces, so the framing is yours.
- How big is 3 × 4 cm in inches?
- 30 × 40 mm is about 1.18 × 1.57 inches: smaller than the 2 × 2 inch US passport photo, and a different shape (3:4, not square). A US passport or visa photo needs the 2 × 2 inch size, not this one.
- How do I print it at exactly 3 × 4 cm?
- Print at 100 % or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”, which would enlarge it to the paper. The file is marked 300 dpi, so its 354 × 472 pixels then measure 30 × 40 mm; cut along the edge of the picture.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. The crop and resize run in your browser, so a photo of your face never leaves your device. The free plan covers 3 files per run, 20 MB per file and 5 runs a day; Pro removes those limits.
