Example

Example: a phone photo for a portal that caps the candidate photo at 30 KB

photo.jpg comes straight from a phone: 3024 × 4032 pixels and a few MB. The application portal wants the candidate photo under 30 KB and shows it small anyway. Settings: Maximum dimension 1080 px, Output format Keep original format.

  1. The 1080 px limit comes first: 3024 × 4032 becomes 810 × 1080 before any quality is tried.
  2. The target is 30,000 bytes. Quality 0.92 is tried, then 0.40; when 0.40 fits, six halvings find the highest quality in between.
  3. If 0.40 is still too big, the photo shrinks by √(30,000 ÷ its size) × 0.95 and the search runs again: at 52,000 bytes that is 0.72, so 584 × 779.
At quality 0.40 the 810 × 1080 photo weighs Next size tried
under 30,000 bytes 810 × 1080, only the quality searched
52,000 bytes 584 × 779 (scale 0.72)
120,000 bytes 385 × 513 (scale 0.48)

photo.jpg under 30,000 bytes, so it passes whether the portal counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes to the KB, at the highest quality that fits. Starting from 1080 px spares the rounds of shrinking down from the phone’s full 12 megapixels.

How it works

  1. Drop the photo or signature the form asks for — JPG, PNG or WebP.
  2. If the form also gives a width and height in pixels, resize first; otherwise just go ahead.
  3. Press Compress to 30 KB and check the size shown next to the file before you upload it.

Frequently asked questions

What fits in 30 KB?
Comfortably a passport-style photo. A full-size phone photo is first saved at a lower quality and, if that is still too big, made smaller — to about 380 × 480 pixels for a photo at this target.
Which forms ask for this size?
Some application portals set 30 KB as the upper limit for the candidate photo, with the signature at half that.
How is 30 KB counted?
The result stays under 30,000 bytes, so it passes whether the form counts a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
Why does my photo come out smaller in pixels?
Because quality alone could not get it under 30,000 bytes: below quality 0.40 a face turns blotchy, so the picture is made smaller instead, by the square root of how far it is over. If the portal also names pixels, resize to them first and compress after.
Will the portal get a JPG?
From a JPG or a PNG, yes: with Keep original format a PNG is saved as a JPG, transparency on white, because a PNG cannot trade quality for bytes. A WebP stays WebP unless you choose JPG as the output format.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The free plan handles 3 images per run, 20 MB each and 5 runs a day.
