Example
Example: a 200 × 230 photo for a form that caps it at 10 KB
The form asks for a photo of 200 × 230 pixels and at most 10 KB. photo.png has already been cut to those pixels with the image resizer, but as a PNG it is far too heavy. Settings: Maximum dimension Original size, Output format Keep original format.
- A target of 10 KB means at most 10,000 bytes. A PNG cannot trade quality for bytes, so with Keep original format it is saved as a JPG, any transparency on white.
- The JPG is tried at quality 0.92, then at 0.40. When 0.40 fits, six halvings find the highest quality in between that stays under 10,000 bytes, and the 200 × 230 pixels are kept.
- Only if even quality 0.40 were over 10,000 bytes would the picture shrink, by √(10,000 ÷ its size) × 0.95, no less than a quarter and no more than 0.9 of its size a round.
| At quality 0.40 the photo weighs | Next try | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| under 10,000 bytes | the quality search at full size | 200 × 230 |
| 14,000 bytes | scale 0.80 | 161 × 185 |
| 40,000 bytes | scale 0.48 | 95 × 109 |
photo.jpg under 10,000 bytes and still 200 × 230 when the quality search is enough, as it is for a picture this small. The size and the pixels are shown next to the file: check both, because a form that names pixels refuses a smaller picture.
How it works
- Drop the photo or signature the form asks for — JPG, PNG or WebP.
- If the form also gives a width and height in pixels, resize first; otherwise just go ahead.
- Press Compress to 10 KB and check the size shown next to the file before you upload it.
Frequently asked questions
- What fits in 10 KB?
- Comfortably a scanned signature or a thumbnail-sized photo. A full-size phone photo is first saved at a lower quality and, if that is still too big, made smaller — to about 200 × 250 pixels for a photo at this target.
- Which forms ask for this size?
- Signature uploads are the usual reason: many application forms want the signature between 10 and 20 KB, and some cap a photo at 10 KB too.
- How is 10 KB counted?
- The result stays under 10,000 bytes, so it passes whether the form counts a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
- Will it change the pixels the form asked for?
- Only if quality alone cannot get under 10,000 bytes: then the picture shrinks, each round to between a quarter and nine tenths of its size, never below 48 pixels on the longer side. A photo already resized to a small form size such as 200 × 230 fits at its own size; check the pixels shown next to the file.
- My file is already under 10 KB.
- With Original size and the format kept, a JPG under 10,000 bytes is handed back as it is, not saved again, since that would only cost quality. A PNG is still turned into a JPG.
- Is my picture uploaded?
- No. Everything runs in your browser. The free plan handles 3 images per run, 20 MB each and 5 runs a day.
