How it works
- Drop a portrait taken from the front, in even light, with space above the head and around the shoulders.
- Choose White if the wall behind you will not do. US rules ask for a plain white or off-white background.
- Press Make photo. The face is found, the top of the hair located, and the picture scaled so the head measures about 1 3/16 inches, in the middle of the 1 to 1 3/8 inch range.
- Download the JPG: 600x600 pixels at 300 dpi, which is 2x2 inches printed and also what the online DS-11 and DS-160 forms accept.
Frequently asked questions
- What exactly does the US ask for?
- A square photo, 2x2 inches (51x51 mm), taken within the last six months, in colour, against a plain white or off-white background, with a neutral expression and both eyes open. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm), and the eyes between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom. This tool handles the size and the head measurement; the rest is down to the photo you start with.
- Is 600x600 the right size for the online form?
- Yes. The DS-160 visa form and the online passport photo tool both want a square JPEG of at least 600x600 pixels, and the file here is exactly that at 300 dpi, so the same file prints at 2x2 inches. If a form asks for a file under a certain size, run it through Compress an image afterwards; at 600x600 it is usually well inside any limit.
- Can I wear glasses?
- No. Since 2016 glasses are not allowed in US passport photos, apart from rare documented medical cases. Take the photo without them; this tool cannot detect glasses and will not warn you.
- Does it work for a US visa photo too?
- Yes, the visa photo has the same 2x2 inch format and the same head range, so the same file works for the DS-160. Requirements for other countries' visas differ; the main passport photo page on this site offers the Schengen 35x45 mm size and eight others.
- Will a photo I took at home be accepted?
- It can be, and millions are. What gets photos rejected is usually the measurable part — wrong size, head too large or too small, or a shadow on the background — and the measurements are what this fixes. Stand a metre or two from a plain white wall, in daylight, facing the camera, and have someone else take it: a selfie held at arm's length distorts the face.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The face detector and the cut-out model run in your browser and the photo stays on your device.
