How it works
- Drop a portrait taken from the front, in even light, with space above the head and around the shoulders.
- Choose White if the wall behind you will not do. Canada asks for a plain white or light-coloured background.
- Press Make photo. The face is measured from the chin to the top of the head and scaled to about 33.5 mm, the middle of the 31 to 36 mm range, inside a 50x70 mm frame.
- Download the JPG: 591x827 pixels at 300 dpi, which prints at exactly 50x70 mm.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the Canadian photo bigger than everyone else's?
- Canada uses 50x70 mm, where most of the world uses 35x45 mm or 2x2 inches. It is simply a different national standard, and a photo cut for another country will not do: the frame, and the amount of shoulder in it, are different. The face itself, chin to the top of the head, must be 31 to 36 mm.
- What else do the rules require?
- A photo taken within the last six months, in colour or black and white, sharp, with a plain white or light background and a neutral expression. Uniquely, Canada also asks the photographer to write the studio name, address and the date on the back of one of the two prints, so a photo made at home is accepted for some applications and not others. Check the current guidance for the document you are applying for before you rely on it.
- Can I use it for a PR card or a citizenship application?
- Those have their own photo rules, and some ask for 35x45 mm rather than 50x70 mm. Read the requirements for the specific application; if it asks for 35x45, use the Schengen setting on the main passport photo page, which is the same frame and head range.
- Are glasses allowed?
- No. Canada has not allowed eyeglasses in passport photos since 2016. Take them off before the photo; this tool measures the head and cannot see them.
- Is my photo uploaded?
