How it works
- Drop a portrait taken straight on, in even light, with space above the head and around the shoulders.
- Choose Light grey or White if the wall behind you will not do. UK rules ask for a plain light-grey or cream background, not pure white in every case.
- Press Make photo. The head is measured from the chin to the top of the hair and scaled to about 31.5 mm, the middle of the 29 to 34 mm range.
- Download the JPG: 413x531 pixels at 300 dpi, which prints at exactly 35x45 mm.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the UK ask for?
- A photo 35x45 mm, taken in the last month for a first passport and within six months otherwise, in colour, against a plain light-grey or cream background, facing forward with a neutral expression, eyes open and hair away from the face. The head, chin to the top of the hair, must be 29 to 34 mm. This tool sets the size and the head height; the rest depends on the photo you take.
- Can I upload it to the online application?
- The online service asks for a digital photo of at least 600x750 pixels and under 10 MB. This file is 413x531, which is right for printing at 35x45 mm but below that minimum, so for the online route take the photo at a higher resolution and use the service's own uploader, or use a photo booth code. Where this helps is the printed photo: two copies for a paper application, or a photo for a bus pass, a student card or a visa.
- Why light grey rather than white?
- Because a plain white background often photographs with shadows on it, and the guidance asks for light grey or cream so the outline of the head stays clear. If you replace the background here, Light grey is the safer choice of the three.
- Are glasses allowed?
- Only if you must wear them, and then your eyes have to be clearly visible with no glare or heavy frames. The simplest route is to take them off. This tool measures the head; it cannot see glare.
- Does the same photo work for a visa?
- Often, since 35x45 mm is the size Schengen countries, Australia and many others use, though head-height rules differ: Schengen asks for 32 to 36 mm where the UK asks for 29 to 34. Pick the standard you need on the main passport photo page rather than reusing this one.
- Is my photo uploaded?
