Example
Example: frogs and toads compared in a two-circle Venn diagram for science class
A third-grade class sorts what it learned about frogs and toads. Choose 2 circles, name the sets Frogs and Toads, give it the title “Frogs and toads”, pick the Forest colours with filled circles, and type each part’s items one per line.
- What both share goes in the overlap, what belongs to one in its own part. If a line is too long for its part, the text gets smaller, then wraps onto two lines, before anything is cut.
- Feathers and Fur go in a band below the circles, inside a frame drawn round the whole diagram: the things that are neither frog nor toad.
- Download PNG saves venn-diagram.png at 1600 × 1152 pixels, twice the 800 × 576 drawing, sharp enough for a slide or a printed worksheet. Download SVG scales to any size.
| Part | Items typed, one per line |
|---|---|
| Only Frogs | Smooth, wet skin · Long back legs for jumping · Live near water |
| Only Toads | Dry, bumpy skin · Short legs for hopping · Can live far from water |
| Frogs and Toads | Amphibians · Lay eggs in water · Start as tadpoles · Eat insects |
| In none of them | Feathers · Fur |
Two overlapping green circles with 12 items in four parts, ready to project or print. The diagram stays in this browser, so the class can add more items tomorrow without typing it all again.
How it works
- Choose 2 or 3 circles and name each set — for example Cats and Dogs.
- For each part write its items, one per line: what belongs only to one set, to two, to all three, or to none.
- Pick colours and filled or outline circles, add a title, and download the diagram as PNG or SVG.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a Venn diagram?
- Overlapping circles, one per group: what the groups share goes in the overlap, what is special to one goes in its own part. It is used to compare, sort and classify.
- How do I show what belongs to none of the sets?
- Write it under “In none of them”: it is drawn in a box below the circles.
- What if there is too much text in one part?
- Items shrink, then wrap onto two lines; if a part is still too full, the last items are summed up as “+N”. Short items work best.
- Can I make a diagram with 4 circles?
- Not here — four circles can’t show every overlap clearly. Two or three cover most comparisons.
- How big is the downloaded picture?
- The PNG is 1600 pixels wide, twice the 800-pixel drawing; its height depends on the title and the items under the circles. A two-circle diagram with a title and one row below is 1600 × 1152. The SVG has no fixed size and stays sharp at any scale.
- Can I print it in black and white?
- Yes: choose the colours “Greys (for printing)”, or “Outline only” for circles with no fill, which uses the least ink and leaves room to write on a printed copy.
- Is my diagram saved?
- It is kept in this browser for next time; nothing is uploaded. Download it to keep a copy.
