Frequently asked questions
- How are the thread colours chosen?
- Every stitch first takes the nearest DMC thread, compared the way the eye compares colours (in CIELAB). Then the least-used threads are dropped one by one, their stitches moving to the nearest remaining thread, until only as many as you asked for are left. A small but important area keeps its colour; a scattered tint does not.
- What is confetti and why remove it?
- A single stitch of a colour surrounded by other colours. Each one means a new thread and two more ends to finish, for a speck nobody will see. Removing them gives each lone stitch its neighbours' colour.
- How big will it be?
- The key page gives the finished size on the fabric count you choose: stitches across divided by the count is the width in inches. 80 stitches on 14-count is about 14.5 cm (5.7 in).
- How accurate is the skein estimate?
- It assumes two strands and full crosses, about 1,600 stitches a skein on 14-count. Buy a spare of the main colours; dye lots vary.
- Are the colours exactly DMC's?
- They are the closest DMC thread numbers to your picture, matched against a published table of DMC colours as seen on screen. Real thread looks slightly different from any screen, so check the key against a colour card if a match matters.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The chart is made in your browser.
