How it works

  1. Add one or more photos, ideally taken from high up: a street, a square, a harbour or a railway.
  2. Put the sharp band where the subject is, then choose its height and how strong the blur is.
  3. Select Make it miniature and download the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a tilt-shift photo look like a miniature?
Up close, a camera can only keep a thin slice of a scene sharp, so we know very shallow focus from photos of small things. Blurring everything above and below a band makes a big scene read as a small model, and brighter colours and a little more contrast make it look toy-like.
Which photos work best?
Wide views taken from above: streets, crowds, car parks, harbours, railways, a stadium. Put the band on the subject and keep it narrow for the strongest miniature look; it works less well on close-ups and portraits.
Is the blur a real lens blur?
It is shaped like one: every point spreads into a soft disc, bright lights bloom as they do out of focus, and the blur grows smoothly with the distance from the band, rather than the even haze of a simple blur.
Is my photo uploaded, and what are the free limits?
No. The effect is made in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device, and there is no watermark. The picture keeps its size, up to 16 megapixels, and its transparency in PNG and WebP. The free plan allows 3 photos of up to 20 MB per run and 5 runs a day; Pro removes these limits.
