Example
Example: an 8 × 10 in printable saved at 72 DPI, set to 300
art-print.png is 2400 × 3000 pixels, made for an 8 × 10 inch frame, but the design app saved it at 72 DPI, so a document or a print order form reads it as 33.3 × 41.7 inches. Settings: DPI 300.
- Print size is pixels ÷ DPI: 2400 ÷ 300 = 8 inches wide and 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 inches tall.
- A PNG keeps its resolution in a pHYs chunk, in pixels per metre: 300 DPI is written as 11,811. The image data is copied as it is.
- A JPG gets its JFIF header changed, and its EXIF resolution too when the camera wrote one. Download art-print-300dpi.png.
| DPI | Prints at, inches | In cm |
|---|---|---|
| 72 | 33.33 × 41.67 | 84.7 × 105.8 |
| 96 | 25 × 31.25 | 63.5 × 79.4 |
| 150 | 16 × 20 | 40.6 × 50.8 |
| 200 | 12 × 15 | 30.5 × 38.1 |
| 300 | 8 × 10 | 20.3 × 25.4 |
| 350 | 6.86 × 8.57 | 17.4 × 21.8 |
| 600 | 4 × 5 | 10.2 × 12.7 |
art-print-300dpi.png: the same 2400 × 3000 pixels, now reading 8 × 10 inches at 300 DPI. Nothing is resampled, so it is exactly as sharp as before; only the size it is placed and printed at changes.
How it works
- Drop one or more JPG or PNG images.
- Choose the DPI — 300 is what most printers and forms ask for.
- Press Change DPI and download; the picture itself is untouched.
Frequently asked questions
- Does 300 DPI make the image sharper?
- No. DPI only tells a printer how large to print the pixels: the same picture at 300 DPI prints smaller and finer than at 72 DPI. To have more pixels, the photo has to be taken or scanned at a higher resolution.
- How big will it print?
- Width in pixels ÷ DPI = inches. A 2400-pixel-wide photo at 300 DPI prints 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide.
- I need a size in cm at 300 DPI.
- Use the resize image in cm page: it sets both the pixels and the DPI.
- Why does my image say 72 DPI?
- Many apps and phones write 72 or 96 DPI, or none at all, when they save; it is only a label. A 2400 × 3000 picture labelled 72 DPI is placed 33.3 × 41.7 inches wide and tall, labelled 300 DPI it is placed 8 × 10 inches, with the same pixels.
- Does a WebP or HEIC keep its format?
- No: WebP, GIF, AVIF and BMP are saved as PNG, which has a place for the resolution, and a phone’s HEIC as a JPG at quality 0.92. JPG and PNG keep their format, and their pixels are not touched.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. Everything runs in your browser. The free plan handles 3 images per run, 20 MB each and 5 runs a day.
