Example: two faces in a sports day photo blurred at strength 7
At school sports day a parent takes a phone photo of their son, sportsday.jpg, 4032 × 3024: in the middle, in a blue tracksuit, he waves at the camera; behind him, left and right, stand two other children, one in red and one in yellow. Before sending it to the class parents’ group chat, the parent blurs their faces. Effect: Blur; strength 7; format: Keep original format.
- Drag a box over the face of each child at the back, about 300 × 340 pixels, taking in the hair as well.
- The blur radius follows the photo’s longer side: 4032 × 7 ÷ 500 = 56.4 pixels. The shape of a head remains, but nobody can be recognised.
- The blur also takes in pixels from around each box, so its edge melts into the photo instead of leaving a hard line. The son and the rest of the photo are not touched.

The two children at the back have blurred faces and the son stays sharp. Because the radius grows with the photo, strength 7 looks the same in the preview as in the saved file, and the same on a copy shrunk to 1600 pixels, where the radius is 22.4.
How it works
- Drop the photo onto the box.
- Drag across each face, plate or screen to blur. On a phone, tap it and adjust the box by its corners.
- Blur is preselected. Raise the strength until the details are unrecognisable in the preview.
- Press Blur marked areas and download the photo.
Frequently asked questions
- When is blur better than a mosaic?
- In photos of passers-by, children at an event or a cluttered room, blur looks more natural because it does not draw attention with squares. For text and numbers, use a solid box, which leaves nothing behind.
- Can the faces be found automatically?
- Yes. Press Find faces and a small face detection model running in your browser puts a box on each face it finds, in every queued photo. Check the boxes and add any face it missed, such as one in profile.
- How strong should the blur be?
- Strong enough that you cannot recognise the face or read the plate in the preview. Strength is relative to the size of the photo, so a setting that works on one photo looks much the same on another.
- Can I blur the whole background?
- You can mark the background with several boxes around the subject, but for a smooth portrait-style background the Blur photo background tool on this site is the better choice: it finds the person or object for you and blurs everything behind it.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The blur is applied on a canvas in your browser, and the saved photo carries no GPS location data.
- Will the edge of the box show?
- No hard line is left. The blur is worked out on the box plus a margin of twice the radius around it, so the box’s edge blends into the real photo around it. Where a box touches the edge of the photo, the outermost pixels are stretched outwards for that margin, so the corner does not darken or let the sharp original show through.
- What are the free limits?
- The free plan allows 3 images per run, 20 MB per image and 5 runs per day. Pro removes these limits.
